Dietitian VS. Nutritionist

What’s the Difference?

A “dietitian” is a professional designation received by those who have completed a 4 year university undergraduate degree, followed by a 12 month Dietetic Internship. After successfully meeting the professional criteria the Registered Dietitian “R.D.” designation can be used, once affiliated with a provincial college of dietitians (in Canada), e.g., Alberta College of Dietitians.

In comparison, a “nutritionist” is not a professional designation, and does not imply that the individual using this title has any formal, credible nutrition education or degree. However, to add to the confusion, in many Canadian provinces dietitian colleges are legally restricting the use of “nutritionist” for Registered Dietitians. As a result, the titles, “nutritionalist” or “nutritional consultant” or other such terms are used by individuals who are unlikely to have received a nutrition degree at a university.

Take a look in the phone book! There are few, professional Dietitians listed, but there are many “Nutritionists” listed – several of which are selling supplements!
